A "culture of respect":
It is impossible to teach men to treat their surroundings
with respect. To such an extent do people fail to understand equilibrium that they either fall into sanctimoniousness or swell
with conceit.
For this reason the bridge to the distant worlds is
difficult for people. AUM 147.
You make a useful and good point about it being akin
with the quality of Solemnity. We are given a definitive term for it by MM.
In reality solemnity is an exalted offering of all
one's best feelings, it is a tension of all superior energies, a contact with the approaching Gates. AUM 523.
If then solemnity is a spiritual tension of superior
energies it is valid to describe, as MM does, such energies with "Let us refer to the Higher World with all respect. AUM 332.
So Solemnity is the quality of energies, whilst Respect is, recognition through equilibrium, of said qualities whether by
the most exalted hierarch to his Elder, or of a soldier for his ranked superior, someone he may look up to. Or of a General
recognising a lower ranked personnel who by achievement has gained in honour and valour in some way, thus meriting special
recognition. Also, in everyday life it is recognition of ones duty of care to ones peers and those up and coming or in need
of some kind!
This calls to mind the divine circulatory flow of spiritual
energies in so much as the flow of energies whether of love or spiritual will, always come from the elders, passed down to
those who look ahead, and in turn pass on these energies or wisdom via knowledge. When respect for this ancient law is disregarded
or all respect for civil laws or respect for social education, the teacher, the educator of social and humanitarian sciences
is brought under attack, we have chaos. The circulatory flow is interrupted and spiritual evolution is slowed or interfered
with to some extent. However MM sates that the violation of co operation is in-admissable! JPC.
In Brotherhoods great and small, all actions are given
through the Elders. LMG1 395.
Teachers of lies have comforted your people and now
they stumble, foolishly. They abhor themselves and do not esteem me through whom your wonders and powers are manifest. Psalm
8. Master Jesus. DSS.
If the law of justice holds, it is necessary to respect
everything that leads to the heights. Heart 506.
Each act of reverence for the Teacher shows an understanding
of the Teaching. Each sign of reverence for the site of the Teacher's labor will show deep understanding and devotion. But
these signs of attention cannot be prompted. These signs must by themselves flower in the consciousness.
The Teacher will not demand, "Pay your respect to Me!"
AY 119.
Respect the principle of Hierarchy. In Brotherhoods
great and small, all actions are given through the Elders. LOMG 395.
A yogi has great respect for Hierarchy. He knows that
there are many Hierarchs above him. SMD4 911.
Who sits upon that mighty Seat within the final fifth?
He with the Name we mention not, save in utter adoration;
the Youth of Endless Summers, the Light of Life itself, the Wondrous One, the Ancient One, Lord of Venusian Love, the great
Kumara with the Flaming Sword, the Peace of all the Earth. IHS 212.
It is impossible to teach men to treat their surroundings
with respect. To such an extent do people fail to understand equilibrium that they either fall into sanctimoniousness or swell
with conceit.
For this reason the bridge to the distant worlds is
difficult for people. AUM 147.
Where mounts the ladder then?
To the greatest Lord of all, before whom e'en that
Ancient One bends in obeisance low; before whose throne of effulgent light Angels of highest rank, Masters and Lords of uttermost
compassion, prostrate themselves and humbly bend, waiting the Word to rise. IHS 212.
A successful co-worker must not impose respect, but
must merit it. AY3 56.
One thing I seek to point out to you: humility must
always accompany a spiritual self-respect which forbids a disciple to stand anywhere upon the Path, except in his rightful
place. DINA1 562.
The wayfarer affirms that he goes to the Lord Himself.
It is true, people are amazed at such a resolution, but they respect such steadfastness. One must set before oneself the loftiest
goal; only then does the road not appear forbidding. One must adjoin the highest quality throughout all existence. FW2 370.
Moreover, it is necessary to understand the significance
of mutual respect, which lies in the foundation of Brotherhood. Bro 424.
Let us refer to the Higher World with all respect.
AUM 332.
Destruction of respect for the Guru will also be the
cessation of achievements. Thus let us remember about full trust. AUM 110.
A simple affirmation of respect for knowledge will
make possible the resolving of all contradictions. True thinking is impossible without reverence for knowledge. The Teacher
advises that knowledge be set as the basis for developing the consciousness. Point out that knowledge builds the path to the
One Teaching. Is it possible that humanity cannot comprehend that knowledge emanates from the One Source? Therefore, the dividing
line between knowledge and ignorance is the dividing line between light and darkness.
We are easily able to bring together the Torah with
the hymns of the Vedas, or the precepts of Buddha with the words of Christ, for We do not discern differences between Teachings
emanating from the One Source. AY 90.
In schools respect must be taught for the pronouncement
of a concept. Of course parrots can senselessly project into space concepts often of great significance. But people must understand
that the word is the pedal of thought that each word is a thunder-bearing arrow. Loss of the true significance of concepts
has contributed much to contemporary savagery. People strew pearls about like sand. Verily, it is time to replace many definitions.
Comm 47.
It is inadmissible even indirectly to violate the fundamentals
of cooperation. To the concepts of cooperation should be added those of teachership, of guidance, of respect for one's fellowman,
respect for oneself, and for those who follow. Precisely at present it is impossible to lessen the significance of cooperation,
as a means of broadening the consciousness. One must grow to love cooperation as a pledge of general success. FW2 350.
“How then, not to respect your forefathers!”
“New cups are given for the feast. Respecting a grandfather, one need not drink out of his cup.” Crossroads.
It is so important to infuse into people respect for
knowledge and for every teacher, each of whom they should consider as a representative in life of light and progress. LHR1.
These enthralling, lofty, moral images can increase
respect for the concepts of the honor and dignity of man - the qualities so easily lost today - and lacking them, the result
is deterioration. And rightly, in order that the seeds might yield fruit, one should start precisely with the children. LHR2.
The subtlest solutions and respect for the human heart
are necessary. FW1 296.
People saturate the world with the most malicious words;
will not rivers of evil flow from them? One must have lost respect for human dignity not to acknowledge that the consequences
of evil speech are terrible. FW1 426.
It is time for humanity to learn respect for the spiritually
expanded consciousness. Heart 553.
The Thinker insisted upon respect for the Teacher.
SMD2 358.
A respect for knowledge is possible that will free
people from skepticism and negation. In each subject there is something that deserves attention.
It is necessary to treat everything with respect. Do
not think that My words apply only to the physical sciences—they apply also to the humanitarian ones. The most important
thing is to free thinking from all kinds of prejudice. SMD 490.
Simple advice about speaking according to the consciousness
of the listener evokes much criticism. Sadly, people most often speak according to their own consciousness. This comes mostly
from their inability to listen. Friends, learn to listen, and you will more easily reach your interlocutor. True, with an
expanded consciousness it is easy to understand the individual nature of your interlocutor, but such a degree of insight is
rare. Therefore, utilize ordinary human means. Mutual respect is akin to compassion. SMD3 528.
The dark brother recognizes no unity with his species,
only seeing in them people to be exploited for the furtherance of his own ends.
This then, on a small scale, is the mark of those who
are being used by them wittingly or unwittingly. They respect no person, they regard all men as fair prey, they use everyone
to get their own way enforced, and by fair means or foul they seek to break down all opposition and for the personal self
acquire that which they desire. LOM 134.
Not only length of years, but possession of the land
occupied by a race of people will ultimately rest upon the honor and respect that has been shown to the aged by the younger
generations of that race ; and the same is true in minor degree in the case of a family group. It is not alone to their parents
that such honor and respect should be shown by children, but to old age in general. The loss of a country, the loss of a large
estate or even the loss of a small home site may easily be the karmic effect of disobedience to the given law, but of far
more importance is the loss of opportunities for gaining wisdom and knowledge which have been slowly gathered in pain and
sorrow throughout a long life by each one of their progenitors ; lost as a result of their contempt of methods used, or means
employed to reach material success.
Not a day passes in which countless tragedies do not
occur upon this sad dark star, tragedies bringing death, destruction, wailing and weeping in their train. The majority of
such tragedies are ephemeral ; the worst effects may pass in a night, and the morning sun show but small traces of the night's
agony ; but there is one tragedy which falls upon every man and woman who have passed the middle milestone of life, a tragedy
which does not pass entirely until the death angel does its perfect work for the individual soul. A silent tragedy, unnoted
at the moment by those near at hand who do not perceive the icy hand of fear as it descends upon the heart with the realization
that henceforth until released by death the soul must enter upon an era of crucifixion.
The soul has no consciousness of time as a factor in
its development. While the body has been losing its power of resistance, its strength and virility, the soul has kept on in
its course of development and in normal instances the souls of the humanity of the present age have reached a point where
only the things that are worth while have any special attraction for them. The body no longer responds to the calls of the
soul as eagerly as it was formerly capable of doing ; it demands more service day by day as the years pass, service too often
unwillingly or carelessly performed by others, or only given from a sense of duty or pity.
With the coming of neglect and indifference by others
the recipient of the same must often face the fact that such trials are the direct result of their own cruel or thoughtless
treatment of the aged of a previous generation before the faces of their own children or dependents. The plastic minds of
their children have received impressions which will invariably be transmitted in later life. Careless reference to the failing
and weaknesses of their elders, patent weariness at the repetition of a story of some past experience, relief at the passing
on of some elderly dependent, all these are fitting the mind of the child for a similar course of action in later years.
The younger generations are now looking forward to
a regenerated world, a world in which the limitations of the present era will be nonexistent, and it will depend entirely
upon the middle aged and the old of this era as to how far those expectations will be realized; for unless the younger generations
can be made to gather the fruit of the experiences of their elders they will be caught in the same vise of ignorance and inexperience
which has hampered humanitarians in the past. Every experience which a human soul has passed through may become an open door
to safety or happiness for some other soul if the latter has the patience to seek for the key which will unlock that door,
and if you of the older generation make no insistence upon the inculcation of the fundamental laws of development in the minds
of your children, the karmic retribution of your neglect or indifference will fall heavily upon you in later years. TT3 251.
Hilarion.
The masses of mankind are battling for position;
position of one kind or another, merely for the sake of the position, when if they could understand all that
is contained in the words, "the least of these, my disciples", spoken
by Jesus, they could appreciate the fact of the futility of the
struggle so far as personal satisfaction through such position, is concerned. Any
position worth having, on either material or interior lines, seeks the man
or woman because he or she has earned it ; and it so seeks through
the action of the cyclic law. It is "the least of these" who gain such recognition by reason
of the child heart that obeys unquestioningly those who have the karmic
right to such obedience, and so acts in conjunction with divine
law. In the child heart, the dividing line . the confining force . is giving way. Spirit has
refined soul, soul is refining body. There has occurred a change in such a life that has reversed the action of the force
formerly acting as repulsion, and the force of attraction is now drawing together and combining all three, body, soul and
spirit, on a higher plane of life, and the position of such an entity in the cosmic scale is secured for all time. TT
